Baan Arun is a personal project with a simple aim: give back to the community by making AI genuinely understandable — through workshops, coursework, and a community that learns together.
A personal project
Why Baan Arun exists.
I’ve spent my career as a technologist and team lead — taking complicated systems, making them make sense, and training the engineers who would run them. After a layoff, I decided to take that playbook to a bigger audience: build learning communities around the technologies changing fastest, starting with AI.
This is a give-back project. The goal is to raise the standard level of understanding for these complex technologies — so the people in our communities aren’t just watching the AI era happen, they’re prepared to work in it. The same way I developed junior engineers into confident ones, Baan Arun exists to develop curious people into capable ones.

We teach toward real decisions and working outcomes, not tool demonstrations for their own sake.

Meet the founder
John Vilaikeo
John Vilaikeo has spent his career keeping large systems running — and now spends it teaching people how to put AI to work.
Most of that career was in site reliability and technical leadership: senior SRE and tech lead roles at Magnite (formerly Rubicon Project), Taleo, Oracle, SignalFx and Splunk, specializing in scaling systems that have to stay up. The through-line never changed — take something complicated and make it dependable enough that everyone else can stop thinking about it.
Recently he branched off to build his own community projects, leaning on AI to carry the workload of running them. That is exactly what he teaches here: not AI as a novelty, but AI as a way to get real work finished.
He builds and moderates online communities — Baan Arun, MacLocalLLM.com, RichmondAction.com and on Reddit. Alongside the technical work he has volunteered for years, from CERT and EMT training to youth programs and Thai-American cultural and scholarship initiatives in Northern California. The habit is the same one behind Baan Arun: learn something properly, then hand it on.
The name
Baan Arun means a home at dawn.
Together the two words express the kind of place we want to build: welcoming, optimistic, and ready for a new way of working and learning.
Baan Arun will begin in Thailand and remain open to a broader international community as the program grows.
